Report of ‘suspicious individual’ caused Edwards school lockout Friday

Schools in Edwards were locked for about an hour on Friday after the Eagle ¾Ã¾ÃÈȾ«Æ·ÊÓƵapp School District received a report of a suspicious person in the area.

District Superintendent Phil Qualman said police were contacted and conducted a search, interviewing the person who made the report.

“Through that process it was determined that the lockout should be lifted, since some of the information was not current,” Qualman said.

A lockout means exteriors are locked, students and staff remain indoors, and school continues as usual within the buildings.

Qualman said the event “demonstrates our process in action” and the lockout was initiated out of an abundance of caution.

Qualman also referenced events in the district which have taken place “this week and last” and encouraged parents to reference a  document that addresses inquiries.

“I am hopeful this will quell rumors and shed light on what has transpired over the past week,” Qualman said.

In a statement earlier Friday, the Eagle ¾Ã¾ÃÈȾ«Æ·ÊÓƵapp Sheriff’s Office said there has been “additional fear and anxiety among the young people who live and attend school in this valley” following the alleged homicide of an Eagle Valley student.

“We are fortunate to call Eagle ¾Ã¾ÃÈȾ«Æ·ÊÓƵapp home, but that doesn’t mean we’re impervious to the realities of the world,” Qualman said on Friday. “I continue to ask that you look out for one another, be mindful of information you share on social media, and if you hear anything concerning, please report it to the appropriate authorities or call the Safe2Tell Hotline at (877) 542-7233.

“I look forward to Monday when we will come back together again with renewed energy to finish our school year strong,” he added.
