Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo parties, a prom for parents and author meet-and-greets round out this weekend’s events

From mint juleps to margaritas, there are plenty of ways to stay busy during the off season in the Vail Valley

Vail Derby Party Fundraiser

The Vail Derby Party is back and this fun event for the adults will benefit the kids of Children’s Garden of Learning this Saturday at Rime restaurant in West Vail. Doors open at 3 p.m. and the event goes until 6 p.m. Tickets are $75 and that includes appetizers, dessert and two beer or wine tickets. Minturn’s Eagle River Whisky is concocting the Derby Smash, a custom drink featuring its renowned Dowd Whisky while Vail Brewing Company and Antler’s Liquor and Wine Cellars are contributing to the beer and wine selections. There will also be a specialty whiskey tasting bar available.

Before and after the race, groove to the tunes by The Stratus Blues Band. The event will include a betting board and a silent auction featuring items like Black Crow skis, stays at the Hythe Vail and The Lion and jewelry-making parties from Squash Blossom. For more information and to buy tickets go to .  



One Rooftop Bar at Westin Riverfront

Celebrate the Kentucky Derby on Saturday with the brand new One Rooftop Bar’s inaugural Derby Party. Before or after you watch the fastest two minutes in sports check out the panoramic Beaver Creek views paired with creative cocktails and delectable bites.

The One Rooftop Bar Derby Party is free and open to all age 21 and older. Post time for the race is set for 4:57 p.m. Although mint juleps are the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby, lead bartender Matthew Hallas and the One Rooftop Bar team will be pouring several Kentucky Derby inspired cocktails, including:

  • Churchill Downs Spritz â€“ made with Aperol, rhubarb, passion fruit and Italian Red Bitter Soda
  • Duchess of Bachelor Gulch â€“ a hot drink made with coconut washed cognac, whiskey, Italicus Bergamot Liqueur, Angostura Bitters and coconut oolong cream
  • Genuine Risk â€“ made with bourbon, grilled peaches, carbonated black tea, lemon and soda

Specialty drinks will be $18 and there’s a 20% discount on the menu. Guests are encouraged to dress in their dapper Kentucky Derby finest for a best dressed contest with great prizes, including a $100 gift certificate to One Rooftop Bar for both best hat and best dressed categories. 10th Mountain Whiskey and Spirits Company

The 10th Mountain Whiskey and Spirits Company Tasting Room in Vail and the Distillery in Gypsum are hosting Kentucky Derby Parties from 2:30 to 6 p.m. There will be prizes for best hat and best dressed male and female and specialty mint juleps will be served by the whiskey experts. Right next to the 10th Mountain Whiskey and Spirits Company Distillery is the new Full Belly BBQ and they are hosting a grand opening in conjunction with the Kentucky Derby Party at the Distillery. Check out this new food truck that will be celebrating its opening with giveaways, T-shirts and food specials.

Cinco de Mayo

Margaritas, tacos, beer and more will be on special at select locations for Cinco de Mayo.

Some places like Los Amigos and El Segundo in Vail Village and El Sabor in Lionshead are closed this time of year, but here’s a partial list of places that are doing Cinco de Mayo specials. Check with your favorite establishment to see if they have any deals going on.

Agave’s annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration returns with food and drink specials, a real live donkey and more. Johnny Schleper and Bob Masters will be playing music on the deck starting at 2 p.m. Come and meet Pedro the Donkey on the deck for photo ops. Specials will run from 2-5 p.m. and include:

Fiesta’s Café and Cantina

Fiesta’s Café and Cantina has been serving the Vail Valley since 1989 and welcomes everyone to come out and enjoy the festivities with them this Sunday. Starting at 4:30 p.m. you’ll find La Razza DJ-Axel Contreras spinning everyone’s favorite tunes. There will also be some food and drink specials, piñata breaking for the kids and fun giveaways throughout the day. The featured drink to kick off the Cinco de Mayo celebration and the summer season is Fiesta’s mijita, which is a mojito with tequila instead of rum with fresh peppermint muddled in silver tequila, fresh lime, agave nectar and soda.

Parent Prom

Prom isn’t just for the teens, this Saturday the Eagle Valley High School Booster Club his hosting a party for the parents. The Parent Prom will be held at Eagle Valley High from 8 to 11 p.m. complete with an 80s and 90s theme, desserts, music, dancing, a cash bar and silent auction. Tickets are $40 for a single and $75 for a couple. The event is a fundraiser for all CHSAA sponsored sports and activities at Eagle Valley High School. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Eagle Valley High School Booster Club and silent auction proceeds will directly benefit the teams for which they were donated.

Dust off that prom dress or tuxedo or find something to fit the theme at the thrift shops and get ready for a good time that supports the students.

Books in Bloom

Books in Bloom returns this weekend with three award-winning authors at the Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa.

The Eagle Valley Library District is once again offering Books in Bloom and will host three award-winning authors at the Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa in Avon this Saturday. Matthew Batt, Bonnie Jo Campbell and Buzzy Jackson will share with the audience their inspirational insights into their creative process and experiences as a writer. There will also be time for the authors to answer questions.

Doors open at 1:15 p.m. and the event starts at 2 p.m. Come early and mingle with other book lovers and enjoy hors-d’oeuvres and refreshments. After the conclusion of the presentations, the authors will be available for book signing. Book sales will be featured through The Bookworm in Edwards. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased online at .

Aging Well Expo

The annual Aging Well Expo is set for Friday morning at the Edwards Field House.

Eagle ¾Ã¾ÃÈȾ«Æ·ÊÓƵapp if full of active adults and although some are order in years, they are young in spirit and want to make the most out of life. On Friday, learn more about aging well at the Aging Well Expo being held at the Edwards Field House from 9 a.m. to noon. The event features guest speakers, educational information and health screenings for blood pressure, glucose levels and even balance. There will also be information on how people can make more connections through lunches, exercise classes or other events.

The event is being hosted by Vail Health, Eagle ¾Ã¾ÃÈȾ«Æ·ÊÓƵapp Healthy Aging and Mountain Recreation is free and no registration necessary, just show up.
