Rival high school soccer game canceled ‘out of an abundance of caution for student safety’

A soccer match between Battle Mountain High School and Eagle Valley High School was canceled Tuesday “out of an abundance of caution for student safety,” according to an email sent to parents from the Eagle Valley School District.

“As many have heard by now, today’s scheduled soccer match between Battle Mountain High School and Eagle Valley High School has been canceled,” the email reads. “This decision was made out of an abundance of caution for student safety in light of recent circumstances … At this time, all other after-school activities are anticipated to continue as planned. We will continue to have law enforcement officers present on our campuses and during after-school activities.”

Matt Miano, the school district’s chief communication officer, said that the decision to cancel was made after “an alleged incident that took place” on Monday.

“The sheriff’s (office), ECSD administrators, and some principals have been looking into it all day,” Miano said. “At this time, there’s no information to confirm or corroborate that the alleged incident occurred. Nevertheless, canceling the game was the right thing to do with the information available at the time.”

As of 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Ashley LaFleur, the public information officer for the Eagle ¾Ã¾ÃÈȾ«Æ·ÊÓƵapp Sheriff’s Office said the allegation made Monday was “still under investigation” by the department.
