Editor’s Note: The Vail Daily is recognizing the amazing volunteers in our valley during National Volunteer Appreciation Week. If you would like to get involved, seek out various volunteer opportunities in the Vail Daily GIVES magazine, which can be found on newsstands now.

Q: What made you decide to volunteer for the Vail Valley Salvation Army? How did you hear about the Salvation Army?

A: I heard about the Salvation Army from my grandmother and she also volunteers with me.

Q: What sort of tasks do you perform when you are volunteering for the Salvation Army? How much time do you spend there – is it weekly, monthly?

A: I usually put food out onto the shelves and help restock. I can only volunteer when we have school breaks and summer break. I go with my grandmother on Wednesdays during that time.

Bowen Seelig goes to Edwards Elementary School where she is enrolled in the dual language program. When she’s at the Salvation Army Vail, she is able to create signs in English and in Spanish.

Q: Do you ever get to see the reactions on the faces of the people you have helped or hear stories of how the Salvation Army has helped someone? How does it make you feel knowing that you have helped someone else?

A: Sometimes when I tell people that everything is free they have a very surprised and excited reaction. This makes me feel good that I have helped someone that may need food and other items.

Q: Have you noticed any changes in yourself after volunteering for a while? If so, what have you noticed?

A: I love volunteering and helping people. I go to Edwards Elementary and have noticed my confidence in speaking and communicating in Spanish has improved.

Q: What advice do you have to give someone who is thinking about volunteering (in general and if they wanted to volunteer for the Salvation Army)?

A: I say do it! Try something new. Give back. It’s fun!
