Letter: In the heart of Vail

In the heart of Vail, there’s a tale of resilience and kindness embodied by Martin Sandoval, my father. Born in Mexico, he ventured to Vail in 1979 with nothing but the clothes on his back, seeking a brighter future. Little did he know that the kindness of certain people would shape his destiny.

His first boss at a local hotel, upon learning that my dad had no place to call home, extended a hand of compassion. Moved by empathy, his boss not only offered him a job but also shelter from the biting cold nights spent in a utility closet. This act of kindness ignited a spark within Dad, fueling his determination to thrive.

From those humble beginnings, Dad embarked on a journey of prosperity. With grit and perseverance, he climbed the ladder of success, transitioning from a modest camper to a comfortable mobile home. In 1991, he achieved a milestone that seemed like a distant dream when he purchased his first home.

Yet, Dad’s legacy isn’t just one of material success. Alongside his journey to prosperity, he imparted invaluable lessons to me. He taught me how to ski, sharing the joy of gliding down snow-covered slopes. We have my dad to thank because my two boys also now ski and get to live in such an amazing place. My family runs deep in this county. From winners of the Gypsum 5K to family that have been on the Vail Mountain bike team. We owe a big thanks to my father for placing that hard work foothold in this valley and letting us all experience this wonderful place.

Through his actions, Dad showed me that no matter the circumstances, extending kindness to others can spark hope and create ripples of positivity. As I stand in awe of his accomplishments and the impact he’s made, I’m reminded that true wealth lies not in possessions but in the kindness, we share with others. And for that, I’m forever grateful to call Martin Sandoval my father.
