Prep notebook: Steamboat Springs nips Battle Mountain 6-5

Postseason tournaments began next week for lacrosse and soccer squads

No. 3 Steamboat Springs defeated No. 4 Battle Mountain 6-5 on Friday in Edwards in a matchup of two of the state’s top boys lacrosse teams.

Keelan Losa led the Huskies with two goals and an assist in the loss. Carter Shonk, Garrett Ast and Jack Pryor also scored for Battle Mountain, which fell to 12-2. The Huskies close out the regular season against Glenwood Springs at home on Saturday.

No. 10 Vail Mountain School defeated Glenwood Springs 12-6 on Thursday in Vail to improve to 9-4 on the season. Charlie Vidal led the way with four goals and three assists. Erik Jaerbyn, Evan Sapp and Drew Johnson each scored two goals apiece and Jay McCormack, Jack Schwartz and Trevor Donovan also tallied goals for the Gore Rangers. VMS closes out the regular season at Evergreen on Saturday.

The 32-team single-elimination 4A state tournament bracket will be released on Sunday. First-round games are Tuesday. Higher seeds will host all playoff games until the state semifinals, which will be at Peter Barton Stadium at the University of Denver on May 18.

The Battle Mountain girls lacrosse team outscored Steamboat Springs 8-3 in the second half to cruise to a 15-7 road victory and improve to 13-0. The Huskies received scoring contributions from eight different players, led by Kate Kovacik and Molly Kessenich, who both tallied three goals apiece. Izzy Kovacik added four assists in the win. Battle Mountain can complete its undefeated season on Saturday against Eagle Valley (0-13).

The girls 4A tournament also begins next Tuesday, with higher seeds hosting through the state quarterfinals. The state semifinals are May 15 at Englewood High School’s Randy Penn Stadium. The state championship game is May 17 at Peter Barton Stadium.

Other prep notes

  • The Battle Mountain girls soccer team tied Steamboat Springs 1-1 on Thursday. Gwyn Jamison scored a first-half goal for the Sailors (6-5-3) and Elilta Kloehn provided the equalizer in the second half on an assist from Thea Armistead for the Huskies (5-6-2).
  • Eagle Valley defeated Summit 3-1 on Thursday to finish the season with a 7-4-3 overall record and 6-2-1 league mark. The Devils finished second in the 4A Western Slope, with its only two losses coming to league-champion Palisade (11-2-1 overall, 7-1-1 league). Eagle Valley is currently 30th in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index, with the top 32 teams qualifying for the 4A state tournament beginning next Tuesday.
  • Solveig Moritz scored one goal, but the Vail Mountain School girls soccer team fell to Delta 5-1 on Thursday. The Gore Rangers (5-3-3) close out their regular season at home against Denver Christian (11-0-1)
  • Eagle Valley boys baseball dropped both games of a doubleheader against Summit on Friday. The Devils fell to the Tigers 2-1 in the first game and 12-1 in the second to drop to 7-13 on the season. Eagle Valley will try to get back in the win column against Grand Junction Central on May 7.
